The Perfect Day

Morning

Start your day the Vietnamese way by navigating your way through a throng of lakeside activity. Enjoy a cold cup of rich Vietnamese coffee (café sua da) as the day’s commotion picks up from a quiet chatter to a lively hum. Take part in what truly makes Hanoi unique, life as it happens on the street – talking, eating and bargaining.

A distinctive place to partake in this facet of life is Hoan Kiem Lake. Take a stroll to the centre of the lake across the red bridge to Den Ngoc Son Temple, or stay ashore to enjoy the 18th century Thap Rua pagoda.

Continue your morning by visiting the Ho Chi Minh Complex, which is open every day except Mondays and Fridays, or wander around the impressive Presidential Palace. Finish at the Temple of Literature, Vietnam’s first university which was built in the 11th century.

Afternoon

No afternoon would be complete without a few hours of shopping. From the Old Quarter, down to Nha Tho Street, shops are bursting with authentic Vietnamese ceramics, silks, lacquerware and linens. Hanoi’s own version of Paris’ Marais of Hanoi, Nha Tho is an ideal stop for gifts and souvenirs.

If bargains and custom-made wares are more your style, we recommend the fabric markets of Hom Market and Dong Xuan Market. Tailors on nearby Hang Gai Street are on hand to make anything you can dream of, from silk ‘ao dai’ to Western-style suits and everything in between.

Spend your afternoon wandering the 36-street catacomb, where each street is named after, and often still linked to, the artisanal trade specific to it, over six centuries ago.

Night

Unwind after a long day of living like a local and shopping to your heart's content by taking in a Thang Long Water Puppet theate. A unique traditional performance of Northern Vietnam. Afterwards, take a walk to Ta Hien. The street stretches only 200 meters and is one of the most crowded streets in the Old Quarter.  Ta Hien offers both old Hanoi and modern Hanoi. The street is also known for the best Vietnamese street foods such as "nem chua", Vietnamese bread and noodles with draft beer that we called "bia hoi".
